New Features

With the feedback we have been receiving, we have come up with a couple enhancements to the game to enhance the gameplay.

Power Sliding

One of the problems with the current alpha version is that some turns require great care when entering and exiting. Time things wrong and you end up hitting the side and causing your racer to slow down. Instead of having to slow down and speed up at the right time, we wanted to add a mechanic that allowed skilled players to go through many of the turns at full speed. We have been experimenting with power sliding and hope to release it in the next alpha update.

Level Enhancements

Many of the current levels are fairly simple. None of them are the final levels that will exist in the final game. We are just building out tracks to get the environment artwork to look good. We adjust lighting, skyboxes, terrain textures, and scenery to get the best effect possible. Building the perfect track doesn’t occur all at once, it is something that occurs over a large stretch of time.

Boost Jumps

Boost jumps are currently being added and may be available in the next alpha version. Boost jumps will launch the racer up when the player hits them. This will allow them to skip tricky parts on the track or to get to alternate routes.

Hyperdrive 3D Alpha Test

The next Hyperdrive 3D alpha test. All those who have signed up to take part in the alpha test will be sent an email with a link to download and try out the futuristic racing game on their system. Currently, only a PC version is available for testing.

We have more hardware inhouse to test the game with. We would like to correct some shader issues with AMD before sending out the test. On the PC side we would like for nVidia, AMD, and Intel GPUs to all work flawlessly and offer similar levels of visual quality.

This is why you want to play Hyperdrive 3D (and yes, a new track is complete) !

First off, we just completed yet another track: An ancient Mayan City, deep in the jungle, fully equipped with sentry turrets (because it is the future, and evil megacorporations take over everything!)

There was a comment on a gaming forum some time ago about our game that I just adored. That comment was “It doesn’t try to be Wipeout, it might even be better”.

That made me feel like a million bucks, because that’s exactly what we’ve been trying to do here. Make a futuristic combat game for people that like games like Wipeout – but not copycat it. The crucial difference in Hyperdrive is mainly how the combat is handled, which in turn affects all other aspects of the game. Simply put, this is one combat racing game which doesn’t rely on (random  or semi-random) powerups you and your opponent collect during the race. Combat in Hyperdrive is more strategic. In each race, you create your loadout by assigning weapons or items to 4 slots. These will include machine guns, miniguns, plasma rifles, flak cannons, missile launchers, mines, EMPs, boosters, shields, all upgradeable items which you will be able to buy with the money you earn from racing. Those mentioned above are the types of weapons/items available, in the game there will be a myriad of available choices, each with different stats and perks.

Each equipped item has its strengths and weaknesses. Both choosing your loadout carefully and using it intelligently during the race makes all the difference in the world. For example, based on your style of play and the upcoming race track, you might want to use slots for loading items such as boosters and shields, or go “guns blazing” and load a machine gun, a flak cannon, a missile launcher and a plasma rifle all together. Your choices matter, from the moment you assign a weapon or item to a slot, to the moment you fire that weapon in the track. And this is what Hyperdrive 3D is about: Fast futuristic racing, with intense combat that requires you to also think, and rewards you for it.

Working on the Website and the Item System

Well, I’m still working on improving the website. I’ve added some more details about the game and what it will have. Images have been replaced and things have been moved around a bit. Hopefully everything seems like it is coming together. As much as I’d rather be working on the game, the website needs to be able to attract people and show off what we are doing.

As far as my development goes. I have finished all features with the multiplayer service. Even though this is just a racing game, there is certainly plenty of things that need to be done to get everything working. Michael has begun integrating it, and he has a simple 1v1 multiplayer demo working.

I will be working on the design for the racer customization and upgrades. We have many of the base attacks and effects already implemented, but we still need to develop the how all the stats and such work.

Here are some rough notes on what I’ve currently got:

Stats

  • Top Speed – Maximum speed of vehicle
  • Acceleration – How quickly the vehicle reaches top speed
  • Armor – Instead of damage absorption, this just refers to total amount of hp the racer has
  • Regeneration – How fast the racer fixes itself
  • Handling – Ease of steering the vehicle

Weapons

  • Laser
  • Flak Cannon (was shotgun)
  • Shield
  • Boost
  • Missile
  • Mines
  • Disrupter
  • Scorcher
  • CryoBeam

Upgrades and stats

  • Reactor (Engine) – Top Speed, Acceleration, Handling
  • Hull – Armor, Regeneration, Acceleration
  • Plating – Armor, Regeneration, Top Speed
  • Aileron – Handling, Acceleration, Armor
  • Computer – Handling, Top Speed, Regeneration

I’m sure there will be some changes in the future, but this is a good start for now.

Help us playtest Hyperdrive 3D!

And the time has come to do some playtesting and weeding out any bugs and glitches, while also polishing up the game. Want to help? Just signup to the alpha test on the home page of this website!

The current build contains single player racing in 4 maps and can be played with keyboard and gamepad. Your reporting of any bugs and glitches you’ll encounter, as well as your general experience with Hyperdrive, will be immensely helpful to us!
